After a slightly noisy night with sounds of the street through the night we set off from Montenegro through into another of the Balkan countries. Kosovo.
First along the road though was a view of a lovely former 5 star island hotel that as Kosovo has emerged from communism that some friction over taxes etc etc has meant that for the time being, the resort is closed. Ironically, it was originally a town with a nice church on the top of it!!! Further along the fabulous mountain scenery, plus a series of windy roads, we proceeded into a river valley with terrific rock walls (limestone possibly) and a picturesque green river in the valley. A short stop on the bus to take the obligatory photos and we were away again.
From there, the road continued upwards into the mountains proper with some of the peaks being well over 2500m elevation, and surprisingly, into the snow. After a border crossing with the regulation mutleys floating around, we stopped roadside and had a great time throwing/bowling snowballs in true Aussie fashion. Our tour mates and guide are going along well. Biiana our guide is Bulgarian as is our driver Borislaw. She gives is some information each day as we get on the bus about the area, with the focus mostly being on the history of each region with respect to people, occupation by Romans, Ottomans etc. We haven't heard much about the current day other than the relative wealth with comparison of GDP/capita etc. Our other tour mates comprise people from Sweden, UK, NZ, USA, Phillipines and Norway...17 in total.
We arrived at our hotel mid afternoon. This is apparently the nicest of our hotels and so we relaxed for a bit, had a look at the pool (but didn't swim) and had dinner at the hotel...very reasonably priced. It was shocking to see how "made up" the young women were and also to note that the smoking/vaping culture is alive and well in Kosovo too. We couldn't really get too much info about Kosovo, not having a city tour here, but tomorrow is also in Kosovo so we might hear more then. A touch of washing from Bronnie (thankyou!) to get us through undies and socks for a few more days :)
